Old Phuket Farm

Hands-on Activities

An education visit to Old Phuket Farm provides students with an opportunity to move beyond the classroom and experience traditional Thai rural life through observation and hands-on participation. Visitors can try traditional tin panning, an activity connected to Phuket’s historic tin-mining industry, plant rice seedlings in the paddy fields, explore the pineapple fields, and observe traditional rubber tapping and the processing of latex into rubber sheets. Visitors can also interact with water buffaloes by feeding and bathing them, while learning about their traditional role in Thai agriculture. These activities provide a practical introduction to the relationship between people, agriculture, natural resources and the historical development of Phuket.

Cooking Class

The Thai cooking class extends the learning experience from the farm to the kitchen, introducing students to the traditional farm-to-table concept. Participants begin by visiting the herb and vegetable garden and selecting fresh ingredients before learning traditional Thai cooking techniques under the guidance of an experienced chef. The dishes are prepared in a traditional style using charcoal-fired cooking, allowing students to experience an older method of Thai food preparation while appreciating how local ingredients, traditional techniques and simple cooking methods come together to create authentic Thai cuisine.

Educational Value

The visit offers valuable lessons in sustainability through rice cultivation, organic gardening, rubber production, traditional farming practices and farm-to-table cooking. Visitors can appreciate the importance of using local resources responsibly, reducing the distance between production and consumption, and valuing traditional knowledge. More importantly, the experience provides an authentic insight into traditional Thai lifestyle, showing how agriculture, food, animals, natural resources and community practices have historically been interconnected. Rather than simply learning about Thai culture from books, guests are able to experience these traditions directly, encouraging greater appreciation for cultural heritage, environmental responsibility, sustainable living and the knowledge passed from one generation to the next.
