Phuket Elephant Sanctuary

This is a pioneering ethical wildlife refuge dedicated to the rescue and rehabilitation of retired and mistreated elephants, allowing them to live freely in a natural jungle environment. A highlight of the visit is observing these gentle giants from Thailand’s longest canopy walkway, which provides a safe and non-intrusive vantage point overlooking the forest habitat below. Participants are introduced to the needs and natural behaviour of elephants, including a visit to the Elephant Hospital to learn about veterinary care and rehabilitation. The Discovery Lounge session on Elephant Communication & Behaviour further develops an understanding of how elephants communicate, interact and respond to their surroundings, while the jungle safari provides an opportunity to observe elephants in a more natural environment as “The Gardeners of our Planet.”

Participants take part in practical activities that contribute directly to the daily care of the elephants. These include preparing food, cutting banana trees, and loading and unloading fruits, grasses and bamboo, as well as helping to prepare supplementary elephant food in the kitchen. Participants also prepare fresh fruits and rice balls for the elephants before observing them during the jungle safari. A vegetarian Thai lunch buffet with filtered water, coffee, tea and soft drinks is provided as part of the day's program.

The program demonstrates how voluntourism can contribute to animal welfare and environmental sustainability through meaningful participation rather than passive sightseeing. By assisting with food preparation and other daily tasks, participants gain an appreciation of the resources, labour and commitment required to care for rescued and rehabilitated elephants. The experience also highlights the ecological importance of elephants as seed dispersers and habitat shapers, encouraging participants to understand the connection between wildlife conservation, healthy ecosystems and sustainable tourism. Through direct involvement and educational activities, the program encourages visitors to become more responsible travellers while supporting the ongoing work of elephant welfare and conservation.
